On January 18, 2024 Stratfield hosted members of Fairfield’s State Delegation including Representatives Jennifer Leeper, Sarah Keitt and State Senator Tony Hwang to discuss Connecticut’s Racial Imbalance Law, last summer’s redistricting plans, and the upcoming legislative session.

Those in attendance heard that Fairfield’s delegation would seek to make updates to the racial imbalance law.  This process could take 2-3 years, and future updates to the law might include a greater focus on socio-economic segregation, instead of race.  In the meantime, Fairfield might be able to obtain State funding to build a new school at Dwight, and use the building opportunity to try to resolve racial imbalance.

The maps in the attached powerpoint below were created in collaboration with Mr. Randolph after Stratfield’s December Community Conversation. They show all residential properties in the Town of Fairfield, grouped into five different categories by tax assessment, from least expensive to most expensive.

In case you missed it, this week’s Board of Education meeting included a discussion on Racial Imbalance and the POCD. CT Examiner interviewed Stratfield parents Chase Dunlap and Greg Bosch after the meeting. You can read the coverage here: https://bit.ly/3Tbbx1w.

Stratfield kicked off its 2023/2024 Community Conversation Series with a presentation on Racial Imbalance, Redistricting, our Towns Plan of Conservation and Development, Affordable Housing, class sizes and the Early Childhood Center.

At the beginning of the school year, Stratfield Elementary School’s PTA started a “Community Conversation” series of monthly events to discuss all things Racial Imbalance, Plan of Conservation and Development, Affordable Housing, the Early Childhood Center and more.

Although it’s highly unlikely that any redistricting will occur in the 2024/25 school year, our school system is still racially imbalanced. It’s also unlikely the State Board of Education will be pleased with the report FPS will file later this Fall stating we failed to find a solution. It’s unclear what action they will take in response. Even if there won’t be an impact next year, for families with younger kids, it’s possible there will be an impact in the years to come.

You can download a copy of the slides from the presentation here. You’ll need a computer! With the embedded videos, the slides are over 200mb.

You can also download a copy of the housing data study Chase Dunlap and Greg Bosch performed, which is discussed in the slides.
